Unable to connect to the - local backup engine

After an initial installation of the CrashPlan PROe software, after starting the application the message appears "Unable to connect to the - local backup engine - retry?"

The reason is that CrashPlan consists of two parts: (I) the user interface & (II) the engine. In a new installation, this engine can stop by itself. This occurs:

  1. only once,
  2. in a singular event (ie not all new installations),
  3. within about fifteen minutes after the end of the installation process.

 

Restarting the engine is the solution. There are various ways:

  • Restart the computer.
  • Restart the service through…
    • the graphical user interface:
      • [ Start ] > [ Run ] > "services.msc",
      • Right click "CrashPlan Backup Service" and choose "Start"
    • the command:
      > net start CrashPlanService
